👉The B.C. government has proposed legislation allowing the City of Vancouver to cap rent increases for new tenants in the Downtown Eastside's single-room occupancy (SRO) buildings. Rent increases, which have risen from $800 to $1,950 a month, would be limited. The Ministry of Housing estimates up to 1,000 people could benefit from the measure, preventing exploitation by landlords. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim welcomed the change, emphasizing the need to protect low-income tenants from eviction and homelessness.
