Canada Cuts Work Permits for International Students Ahead of Schedule
โ Canada has accelerated the cutoff date for issuing work permits to international students in public-private partnership programs, moving it from September 1 to May 15. This move aims to prevent schools from manipulating admission dates. Under the partnership, public schools used to admit foreign students who would then attend private institutions, enabling them to apply for work permits upon graduation. However, affected students can still seek alternative work permits in sectors with workforce shortages. Ontario, with numerous such partnerships, stands to lose around 133,000 international students. Canada's tighter regulations since October 2023 aim to alleviate housing shortages and rising rents caused by increased immigration numbers.
