New Pilot Programs to Grant Permanent Residence to Caregivers on Arrival
โ Caregivers coming to Canada to look after children, seniors, and disabled individuals will be granted permanent residency upon arrival under two new pilot programs announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller. These enhanced programs, set to replace those expiring on June 17, will expedite the settlement process for qualified nannies, child-care, and home-support workers. The pilots, soon to become permanent, will allow caregivers in both temporary and part-time roles to qualify. Canada aims to admit over 15,000 caregivers as permanent residents in the next two years. Caregivers will need a full-time job offer, meet language requirements, have a high-school diploma, and possess relevant work experience. NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan emphasized the need to reclassify caregivers as skilled workers, citing exploitation due to their precarious immigration status. The current stringent language and education requirements, a legacy of Conservative policies, have hindered caregivers from settling in Canada. .
