IRCC Introduces Measures to Fast-Track Citizenship for Some Foreign Nationals
โ
The Canadian government is considering extending citizenship rights to second-generation children born abroad if Bill C-71 is passed. Historically, only first-generation children born abroad could automatically claim Canadian citizenship. Ahead of permanent changes expected to be announced on June 19, 2024, IRCC has introduced interim measures for foreign nationals affected by this rule. These measures allow urgent processing for proof of citizenship applications impacted by the first-generation limit (FGL). Eligible applicants can request a discretionary grant of citizenship, processed by the Immigration Minister, if they meet specific urgent criteria such as accessing benefits, proving citizenship for employment, or urgent travel needs.
