New Citizenship Bill to Grant Rights to 'Lost Canadians' Born Abroad
โ Immigration Minister Marc Miller is anticipated to introduce a citizenship bill on Thursday, aiming to extend citizenship to certain children born outside Canada. Under the previous law altered in 2009 by the Conservative government, Canadian parents born abroad couldn't transmit citizenship unless their child was born in Canada. Amendments in 1977 and 2009 also revoked Canadian citizenship from many born abroad, termed "Lost Canadians." Last year, the Ontario Superior Court ruled the existing system unconstitutional, prompting Ottawa to address the issue by June 19. The method of determining individuals' significant ties to Canada for citizenship remains unclear. .
