Diplomatic Tensions Lead to a 42% Drop in Indian Student Visas Granted by Canada
โ
Diplomatic strains between India and Canada in 2023 result in a 42% decline in Indian student permit applications approved by Canada during Q4. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) cites reduced staffing following the expulsion of Canadian diplomats by India. Only 69,203 Indian student permit applications were processed in Oct-Dec 2023, compared to 1.19 lakh in the same period in 2022. Despite concerns about extended processing times, there's sustained interest in Canadian education as students continue to apply for study permits. The diplomatic tension escalated with accusations and counter-accusations between the two nations.
