Employers, recruiters, and consultants are illegally charging thousands of dollars for jobs, including fees for Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs), which should be covered by employers. Anila Umar, CEO of the Centre for Newcomers, has observed this scam for 30 years and notes its rise in Alberta amid population growth. Many workers, unaware of the proper process, fall victim to these schemes, spending years saving money only to realize they've been deceived.
