Canada Tightens Spousal Work Permit Rules, Impacting Thousands Over Next Three Years
โ Canada's Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced significant changes to Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) eligibility. Over the next three years, 50,000 fewer permits will be issued to spouses of international students in select programs, including doctoral and masterโs degrees. Spouses of students in masterโs programs shorter than 16 months will no longer qualify. Further restrictions apply to study permit caps for 2025, which sets aside 12% of permits for master's and doctoral students. SOWPs for spouses of temporary foreign workers will also be limited to highly skilled professions, reducing the total by 100,000 permits. .
